Sigma Story

Shawn Clemons initial introduction to the sisterhood was when she joined the Rhoer Club with the Gamma Sigma Chapter in Houston, TX. The love and mentorship that was gained from this chapter caused a desire to continue this connection as a member of the Sorority. She was inducted Fall 2010 through the Beta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. She served in various leadership roles throughout her undergraduate years including Basileus, Anti-Basileus, and NPHC Vice President. Upon graduation, she immediately transferred to the alumni chapter, Mu Sigma in Baton Rouge. Due to her career moving her back to her hometown, she joined the Gamma Phi Sigma Chapter in Houston, TX.

In 2015, Soror Clemons was inspired to take on the role of 2nd Anti-Basileus, Advisor to the Alpha Lambda Chapter at Texas Southern University. She remained in this capacity for 6 years where amazing things took place during her tenure. During her terms as advisor, Alpha Lambda increased the membership from 1 Soror to 51 Sorors prior to the conclusion of her role. The chapter won numerous awards such as Chapter of the Year, TORCH Award, Scrapbook and Display Awards, TSU Sorority of the Year, and Homecoming Step Show, just to name a few. Alpha Lambda was also recognized as a Leadership Giver for the Centennial Boule. Her dedication and commitment earned her Advisor of the Year for 5 consecutive years, 2022 Legacy Builder Award and the 2022 International Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor of the Year.

The work she conducted to enhance the membership experience continued in her role as the 1st Anti-Basileus of the Gamma Phi Sigma Chapter in Houston, TX. During the 2022-2023 Sorority Year, her work led GPS to becoming a Bicentennial Chapter and induct 31 new members. The chapter also worked to increase their community impact through various service challenges, initiatives and recognizing the dedication of chapter members.

Soror Clemons has also held additional roles and served in different capacities within the Sorority. She has served as the SWR Syntaktes Assistant, Area 3 Coordinator, Mentor to Undergrad Advisors, Undergraduate Concerns Committee and other committees. Her work in the organization has only amplified her fire to serve which has led to becoming a candidate for the Southwestern Region Undergraduate Chapter Coordinator where she can continue to give GREATER!

Professional Experience

Shawn Clemons currently serves as an administrator in the public school setting in a local school district. From an early age, she developed a love for learning and helping others. After graduating with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education, she began working in the school setting to help support students with their own educational journey. After moving back to Houston, Soror Clemons decided to join the school district the she attended during her K-12 academic years. The more that she learned, the more she wanted to pour into her students and colleagues. Her desire for the academic progress of students naturally sparked wanting to learn how the social emotional developments contribute to the journey of students which lead her into administration. Over the past nine years, she has served her hometown community to enhance the learning experience of the students to positively impact the foundational skills needed for success.

Leadership Experience

2022 - 2024

Associate Principal

Administrator for an early literacy program and mentor for new Assistant Principals in the district through leadership department. Works systematically on growth plans, data analysis for goal development, and facilitating professional development. 

2020 - 2022

Dean/Assistant Principal

Daily operation of the safety, instruction, and discipline for students on an elementary campus. Provide professional development of teachers based on data analysis and best practices. Assisted with the improvement plan to increase student achievement leading to an 'A' campus rating.

2013 - 2020

Teacher & Coach

Taught on both the elementary and secondary level as an Reading Teacher to assist with the academic and social emotional development of students. Worked with diverse population of students and assisted with the growth and development of teachers as a teacher leader. Conducted professional developments in various areas such as Learning Management Systems, Supports for Gifted Students, and Differentiating Instruction.
